Welcome to blog.alley.se at WordPress.com. Now the blog has a new location. I happen to be moving pretty much stuff away from my own domains and to other services.

Actually this allows me to spend more time with the content and less time upgrading and servicing web applications. I am afraid that this blog will not make it very long and by upgrading the old systems when not writing feels a bit tough. So I moved it here. It feels good.

I am emptying the bucket and spreading it out.

Sennheiser HD515; Review

The German company Sennheiser is known for their quality products amongst a wide area of users. Whether you are a music lover, gamer or a pilot you certainly have heard of the company. I recently bought the HD515 headphones, a model which is a for me pretty reasonable price.

Why should someone get headphones? I got mine because I had my speakers at home and I use to listen to music at a somewhat high volume late at night. When you live in an apartment you do not want to wake up your neighbors in the middle of the night just because you want to listen to some music. So I got myself some headphones. I can listen to whatever I want, when I want, how loud I want.

Me and a couple of friends have listened to some music in the HD515 and we all agree on that it sounds really great. I have never had such comfortable headphones as these. This weekend I had them on for some hours and I must say, you forget that you have them on. The only thing you could feel is that your ears get pretty warm after a while, that could just be me sweating.

I am not the best person reviewing sound or music products because it is just not my cup of tea, I love listening to music and I have a hunch of what is good and what is bad. Though I think that everybody can feel the quality of the sound coming out of speakers or headphones.

New location

I have now moved from my last home at my parent to my own student apartment.It is approximately 80km from my parents home, in a new town.

After being a country boy I now feel really home living in a city where it is close to everything and no need to go by bus, train or car to get to anything.

What I have been doing lately.

I am going to tell you a little bit of what I have been doing lately. First of all, I have graduated from upper secondary school and have worked for about four weeks at a place like some sort of janitor. But what I am going to tell you something about is my website work.

I have been working on a website for a diving club in Lidköping, the site is built in PHP5 and I think it is the best site I have ever done. I know that there are alot of things that I can improve but right now I am pretty pleased. The site includes image uploading, adding news and dives (trips to places to dive). The site is called, l-sdk.se.

The site is built around the MVC pattern and is object oriented. When I have thought out the system I tried to come as close to the way Rails have done when it comes to adding pages and such. I feel that I have succeded in a way that there are not in any way a problem to add pages but instead it is fast and seamless. The system is also built around a configuration file in which the user sets variables, time settings and webmaster information.

The system is nowhere near complete but in about 2-4 weeks I think I might have come somewhere near a 1.0-stable version. That is also when I will release it here for others to evaluate and maybe to help me improve the code.

Ohh, by the way. I got into the Network- and System administrator program in Skövde.

The WordPress problem #2

Now, why have I stopped blogging?

It was mainly because there were some problems with WordPress, I got some errors when logging in and administrating this blog. Now the problem is solved by upgrading the K2 style which this site relies on.

Hopefully this will put me back to blogging again. Probably not as serious as before but blogging.

I like to see you stop by again!

About the WordPress 2.5 problem

As you may have noticed there have been several hours of downtime and problems with my blog. The problem right now is that my original theme is away, I forgot to do a backup on all my things and some of the contents of the blog is now gone. Backup is vital! I have full backup on all my things since a week or a little bit more but all things before that are unfortunately gone.

I am going to try to get the ship back on track and fix the theme as soon as possible. I will try to find the images for the posts as well but it could be lost.

Update

So, I found a backup of my theme (thank god!) and most of the things are like it used to be. The main problem right now is that the new WP 2.5 media uploading mechanism refuses to upload my images so I can not upload the old images via the administration interface, which sucks. For me this upgrade was not very important and I did not need to do it but I did and it is now upgraded, some problems still exist. The main problems I have are that when I log in the page shown is a blank page and the upload problem described above.

I am sorry for the trouble I caused with the site, I will be more careful with it in the future and do some regular backups.

Someone else who got problems with the WordPress 2.5 Release Candidate?

IPv6 Introduction

As many of you probably know there has been a buzz about the IP’s are running out. We have reached a point where we need more addresses and the need for one address per device in our home is present. Imagine you checking the Internet and have not got an address, that should feel like not getting in to a club where you got free drinks.

IPv4, Internet Protocol version 4 is the current standard of the addresses today, an address looks mainly something like this 195.47.247.104. The IP’s are divided into different subnets, some are “free” (these are the ones you use in your local network). Free addresses are 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255 and 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255. The rest are divided across the Internet. IPv4 addresses are 4,294,967,296 (2³²) in numbers, that is a few, yes and then with subnets and network address translation it will be even more but not enough.

IPv6

The rescue is IPv6, there will be about 3.4×10³⁸ (2¹²⁸) addresses (approximately 5×10²⁸per person). The address consists of 8×4 hexadecimal numbers and an address might look like this: 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:1428:57ab, the address can also be shorted down to look like 2001:db8::1428:57ab. A bunch of routers and servers are supporting IPv6 and it could be implemented in a few years. IPv6 offer benefits like greater addressing space, built-in QoS and better performance in routing.

For all who have worked with networks know about the headers of an Ethernet frame, a magnificent change from IPv4 is the simplification of it. Some header fields have been dropped or made optional, this is to increase the speed of processing packets. Support for extensions is also implemented to make IPv6 more customizable in the future.

This was a short introduction of IPv6 which I know we will see more of in the future, I am very excited to see the development of this network layer protocol and it will be interesting!

Nikon DSchool Basic; Review

I was at the Nikon DSchool Basic yesterday. When I bought my Nikon D40 DSLR, I got the DSchool Basic course for free. The course was about 2h long and very full of content, lecturer Peter Ericsson spoke about the technical terms in photography and different measurements of colors in pictures. Some sort of theme was “It is not the camera that takes the picture, It is you”.

Ericsson talked of focal length, shutter and exposure, these terms are somewhat standard and will always be introduced in a Basic course like this. My main interest was focused on the part were Peter introduced the flash photography, I hate taking pictures indoors and in places with low light because they become as he told us very bright on the first object and darker behind it. One solution was slow sync ( read more about it at kenrockwell.com), then we had the solution of using external flashes to make awesome effects. I kind of liked the slow sync idea and will try to use that as often I can. Then there was outdoor photography and how strange it might seem at first you should turn your flash on here, this is because dark areas will be lightened up and cause a more natural looking photography.

The metering setting was also brought up. There are three different settings, Matrix, Center-weighted and Spot. The three settings behave quite different, Matrix is for strong colors and measures 256 points from all around in the picture. Center-weighted checks colors in the center and is often used when there is a contrast between fore- and background (Peter showed this image). Last one is Spot, in D80 you have a circle which it controls colors from, in D40 the circle does not show for the photographer but it is the same. The Spot mode follows the focus.

Peter also talked about different exposure modes, objectives, and much more. Check out the course if you want to know more about it. This course was in Gothenburg, Sweden but I guess there are more places in the world having these.

Roundcube Stable Release!

After 2 years of hard work the program has finally reached a stable version, the webmail client has a very nice interface and comes with some new updates for the stable version. I am proud to be a RoundCube user, it is small, scalable, lightweight and neat. The interface is good-looking and works like a charm with AJAX.

Some of the new updates in 0.1-stable are:

An interactive installer script
Remember decision to display images (annoyed me very much before)
Improve message compose screen

Unfortunately the RoundCube 0.1-stable is in PHP4 which means that the PHP5 support will be added after this release. It is kind of sad that they did not code this release in PHP5 so it would be easier to configure and more powerful.

How to upgrade from existing installation

The easiest way to do this, is read the README, where it says to replace some things;

Replace index.php
Replace all files in folder /bin/
Replace all files in folder /program/
Replace all files in folder /skins/default/

And then it is all done, your RoundCube 0.1-stable release is ready to rock (mostly receive mail though)

Thoughts

Why do I use RoundCube? The main thing is that it looks and behaves nice, it is also smooth and fast. RoundCube is not so old yet, so some problems is bound to occur. The thing I would like to have is a filter option in it that will take care of my Postfix filters, I know that there are plugins for this but I would like to have them there from the beginning. Yes, better plugin implementations would be nice as well, take over the easiness of WordPress to add plugins.

I have not tried the RoundCube Installer script but I would like to know if it is working well and if it is as good as it should be.
